Jewellery Care Guide
Jewellery Care Guide
With a little care, your Gemzlane pieces can stay beautiful for years. This guide covers how to store, clean, and handle your jewellery depending on the material.
General Care Tips
A few simple habits go a long way for all jewellery types:
- Keep away from moisture – Remove jewellery before bathing, swimming, or exercising. Water, sweat, and humidity speed up tarnishing and can dull gemstones.
- Apply perfume and lotions first – Chemicals in perfumes, hairsprays, and body lotions can react with metals and coatings. Always put jewellery on last.
- Avoid heat and direct sunlight – Prolonged exposure can fade stones, weaken adhesives, and discolour metal finishes.
- Store separately – Store each piece in its own pouch or compartment to prevent scratching and tangling. A cool, dry place away from sunlight is ideal.
- Put jewellery on last, take it off first – This minimises exposure to cosmetics, friction, and impact.
Care by Material
Brass Jewellery
Brass is a warm-toned alloy that may naturally oxidise or darken over time — this is normal and not a defect.
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after each wear to remove oils and moisture.
- Store in an airtight zip-lock pouch or an anti-tarnish bag when not in use.
- Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, vinegar, or abrasive cloths.
Sterling Silver Jewellery
Sterling silver (92.5% silver) may tarnish when exposed to air, sulphur, and moisture — this is natural and can be reversed.
- Polish regularly with a soft silver polishing cloth to maintain shine.
- Store in an airtight pouch or a jewellery box with anti-tarnish lining.
- Keep away from rubber, latex, and household chemicals, which accelerate tarnishing.
- Do not use toothpaste or abrasive pastes — they can scratch the surface.
Pearl Jewellery
Pearls are organic and delicate. They require the most gentle care of all materials.
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth after every wear to remove sweat and oils — never use chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners.
- Allow pearls to air-dry fully before storing.
- Store flat (not hanging) in a soft pouch or cloth-lined box, away from other jewellery that could scratch them.
- Keep away from perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics entirely — even mild exposure dulls the lustre over time.
- Pearls need a little humidity to stay hydrated; completely airtight storage for long periods is not ideal.
Gemstone Jewellery
Care varies by stone type, but these general guidelines work for most pieces:
- Wipe with a soft, damp cloth after wear. For a deeper clean, use mild soapy water and a soft brush — rinse and dry well.
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless your stone is confirmed safe for them (diamonds generally are; opals, emeralds, and pearls are not).
- Store each piece separately to prevent harder stones from scratching softer ones.
- Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can cause some stones to crack or cloud.
- Remove gemstone jewellery before any manual work, sport, or heavy activity.
A Note on Our Care Claims
We want to be straightforward with you. At Gemzlane, we do not claim our jewellery is permanently waterproof or guaranteed tarnish-free. All metals and coatings interact with moisture, skin chemistry, and environment over time. With consistent care, however, most pieces will retain their beauty for a long time.
If a specific product listing mentions a finish, plating, or coating, follow any additional care notes included on that page.
